Style ConfidenceHave you ever noticed how some women always look “put together” no matter how they are dressed?  It seems as if they can wear a bag over their head and still look fabulous!

They even make getting dress seem effortless yet it eludes you!  You too can have a look that is pulled together.

The key to knowing what looks good on you is to take each part of your body and understand it!  Look at your body’s characteristics.

Look at:

  1. Face Shape
  2. Body Line
  3. Coloring
  4. Style Personality

Through makeup techniques you can enhance your best facial features.  Getting the right hairstyle will ensure you are complimenting your face shape. Knowing your face shape will also help you selecting the best earring shapes!

Knowing your body line will help you choose the most flattering shapes and styles so that you can look balanced.  You will know where you can add bulk and know how to accent the positives.  You’ll  learn how to wear accessories to draw attention to your face.  Finally, knowing your body line will help you choose your shoe styles to make your legs look their very best!

You personal coloring is key to selecting the right colors for your wardrobe.  Choosing the right colors will ensure that you only have what looks good on you, and makes you feel great every time you get dressed.  Th right colors will help you choose the correct lipstick and even coloring your hair.  It does matter!

Knowing what your style personality is quite possibly were most style mistakes are made!  Many women try to emulate a friend, colleague or style icon, but if it is not your own style then it will never feel like you!  Check out the “orphans” in your closet and ask yourself why you don’t wear it.  Is it the color, fit or is the style all wrong?

A confident image starts with knowing these 4 components of who you are.  Be confident in your image and you will always:

Style Tips Cargo Cool

It’s summer time and the dressing is easy!  Now that the temperature is rising, why not throw on a cool cargo skirt to take the heat off!  Spring fashion always has a wonderful mix of hard and soft looks.  This season it is no different.

“Camo” has gone classic and so have the styles that go with it.  That means a cargo skirt in your closet might just be the next thing to purchase.

When you are wearing something as casual as a cargo skirt, ensure you balance out the casual flair with something less casual.  A dressier top or shoes will balance out the look and keep everything looking new and fresh.

Wearing too casual of a shoe a.k.a. a flip-flop because you want to feel more comfortable will take the whole look from young and hip to “o.l.” (old lady).

Check out these quick tips and get into the cool looks of cargo this summer.

  1. Choose a skirt that has a crisp feel and is fitted through the hips.  Make sure it isn’t too slouchy or you’ll add unnecessary pounds.
  2. Opt for a thin-tissue weight t-shirt, even a slouchy top will throw in just the right mix to soften the hard lines of the skirt. A form fitting top or shirt will become too much like a uniform – too predictable.
  3. Pair the outfit with one of the latest cage or strappy wedges and heels.
  4. Add a bucket bag or cross shoulder tote in a pop of new color -red or yellow- and you’re good to go.

Remember these things and you’ll:

“Look Good, Feel Great and Have FUN Doing It!”

Becoming a Stylista

This week I have been teaching a class in color.  There were students from the US and Canada and as far away as Korea.  All were and are serious students, learning how to become image consultants.  Midway through the first day, I said to one , I do not consider myself a “fashionista”, I consider myself a “stylista”.  I study fashion, but I am a student of style!

There is not a woman that I have met who doesn’t want to look good, be current or fashionable.  Anyone CAN buy fashionable clothes but it’s the woman the knows, truly knows her style that people notice.  She is not a “fashionista”, she’s a “stylista”!

How does she do it?  How does she learn how to buy the right clothes for herself no matter what her size, shape or lifestyles?  She is a student of herself.

Youth is very forgiving.  We all expect young people to make silly mistakes.  We forgive them because we know they are on a path, learning what to do.I used to tell my children once is a mistake, twice is probably o.k., but a third time…well that’s stupidity.  That may sound harsh, but reflect upon the “stupid mistakes” you have made.  There were probably opportunities to learn along the way that you never paid attention to.   The point is to learn from your mistakes.

DSCN3043When you are in your 20′s you should experiment with fashion.  I encourage you to try on different styles to see how you feel and what the world says when you are doing so. But DO pay attention..Remember once is a mistake!

In your 30′s,  you should have learned at the very least what shapes looks good on you in the past decade.  Narrow down the choices, you are not in college anymore.  Your closet still will have some mistakes but there shouldn’t be as many.  Mistakes now may come in the form of color or style.  Pay attention to whether you prefer floral prints or stripes, and certain fabrics or detail such as ruffles or embellishments.

By the time that you have hit your 40′s you should have a solid idea of what styles looks and feels good on you.  Eliminate EVERYTHING in your closet that is a mistake and doesn’t look or feel good on you. As your body and lifestyle changes, choices that you have made in past decades will continue to support you and make you look great.

Cruise into your 50′s and beyond embracing the simplicity of dressing for yourself and the well known adage “less is more”.  Accessories are your BFF (best friend forever). You are no longer searching for fashion because you have STYLE.  You know how to take a trend, a fashion statement and put it into your wardrobe and make it your own. Congratulations!  you have now become a “stylisa”!

Remember, you DON’T have to do it alone either!  There is great benefit to being a life long learner!  Wisdom is power and you now have the power to:

“Look Good, Feel Great and Have FUN Doing It!”

See Style – Get Style

DSCN2386 Sometimes what’s in your closet just feels boring and has no umph.  Sometimes you just can’t see the “forest through the trees” as they say.  Pieces have been hanging in there for so long you can no longer “see” the possibilities that it holds in an up to date look.

For me this happens toward the end of every season.  I’m tired of it and ready to move on.  For this reason alone, it is important to try and have just the current season’s clothes in eye view every day.  We all want a change, something new but it even more difficult when the DSCN2396uniform of the day is in front of us 365 days a year.DSCN2395

I was in another closet last week and discovered 3 pretty normal but interesting pieces.  After pulling out these pieces and organizing the rack so I could see what was there, new opportunities came rushing in.

So as you clean your closet and transition to the upcoming season do these three things to help you “see” the possibilities.

  1. Move out of season out of your closet
  2. Arrange your clothes light to dark left to dark
  3. Separate suits and hang tops and bottoms separately in order as in #2

It is really just that easy to :

What to Wear This Spring-Are You Ready-Get “DRESSED”

Up to now I’ve talked a lot about things that may be expired or pieces that are exhausted in your closet.

We’ve looked at the “cracks” in your closet.

All of this is in great anticipation for cleaning out your closet and getting ready for SPRING.  Are You Ready to get DRESSED???

If you haven’t been shopping in a while the biggest trend that you will notice on the clothing racks is the quantity of dresses.

Retailers have loaded up on dresses in everything from

  • pretty prints, butterfly motifs, breezy, billowy sheer & netting to
  • tribal, color blocked, geometric psychedelic patterns & cutouts.

Where once were rows and rows of pants, suit jackets and jeans you’ll find dresses.  There are a few skirts right now but dresses are the trend.

If ever you wondered how the tides of fashion changes, you had only to reflect on the last year and you could see.  It’s rather like Malcom Gladwell’s book The Tipping Point.  It started with a little ripple last year.  I wrote about it last spring in a blog called “Obsess the Dress”. This trend will continue for the foreseeable  future.

So, if you are dress-adverse, don’t fight it anymore, there is one out there for you!  This season ya, “gotta getta dress” and:

“Look Good, Feel Great and Have FUN Doing It!”

Style Interrupted

Have you ever felt “frumpy”, “OL” (old lady)?  Well, I’ve been feeling a bit like that lately and have been wondering why.  I’m supposed to have all the answers, right?  I’m supposed to look like I have it all going on all the time!  Be assured that all of us have these moments where we feel we are in a state of “disrepair”.  DSCN2136

Do you know what “interrupts” your style?  Is it weight gain, a birthday,  personal transition, old hairstyle,  or could it be a simple as being tired of the season?

We are almost 6 weeks into the new year.  This just about the time when New Year’s resolutions begin to wax and wane.  Perhaps there is a correlation?

For me, there seems to be a pattern in each season (twice a year) where I begin to get slack with my wardrobe.  It is near the end of the season and I am anxious for the transition. I’m not especially fond of these late winter months.  They leave me feeling like I’m in limbo land and I get quite bored with the mix and match opportunities my closet presents.

So, what’s a person to do to keep it going waiting for the next season?

Retail therapy can help a little, but I caution you about spending too much time in the sale racks loading (cheap is expensive) your wardrobe up.  Yes, there are great buys out there right now, but be serious about what you are adding to your winter wardrobe.  Your full rewards will not be realized again until next season.

I did find a great new shirt yesterday when I was looking to see spring trends yesterday. There will be lot’s of options with this that will be fun to wear.  It’s blue (a good color for me) and  tangerine-fun for spring.  I’ll wear this with a denim jacket (hot for spring) and then with my navy blue blazer….add some fun accent jewelry and maybe even capris… Are you getting the picture??

Check in with yourself when you are looking at sale pieces and you will had smooth sailing into the next season:

  1. Follow the 3 F’s (fit, flatter, feel good)
  2. Don’t buy it just because it is on sale
  3. The piece should go with 3-5 other pieces in your wardrobe or it stands the chance of becoming an orphan
  4. Stay in your core style for major pieces
  5. Add accent style for supporting pieces

Now is a good time to begin assessing what worked this season and what didn’t.  Remember: plan, focus, attack and you will

Part 3 Trend Trouble – Danger Zones in Your Closet

This is the final installment in the Danger Zones in Your Closet 3 Parts to  Wardrobe Malfunction. Up to this point we have been talking about:

Today, we are uncovering the trouble with trends. Everyone wants to be stylish, trendy perhaps.  But, there is a key difference in the 2.

  • To be Stylish you must know what your unique personal style characteristics are and adapt the trends that work with your personality.
  • To say that you are Trendy doesn’t necessarily mean that you are “stylish”. You can be trendy and stylish at the same time BUT you must know WHAT your style is.

Who you are and expressing that in your style is considered “stylish”. Adapting the trends appropriately to your style and you become “trendy”.  Am I making sense here?

We’ve all seen middle-aged women who adopt a trend in an attempt at being “current” and trendy.  It comes off looking all wrong and mismatched.  A poor attempt at both to say the least.  Take a look around you when you are just out and about.  How many women do you see trying desperately to wear the all new “skinny” jean look and getting it all wrong?

Take it from me, a “middle-aged” woman.  When you embrace a new trend, no matter what your age, be sure to look at how the trend is “staged” both in the magazines and in the market.  What tops are paired with the look?  What shoes?  Are there specific embellishments to the look that make it look unique?  Then ask yourself the other questions:

  • Does it fit my style?
  • Will it flatter my body?
  • Will if feel good on me?

Ultimately, that’s the bottom line…..Fit… Flatter…Feel Good...You’ve heard it from me before!

There’s nothing worse that a women who remembers wearing something earlier in her life and tries to bring it back again the same way.  On the other hand, there is nothing more beautiful than a middle-aged woman that knows and embraces her style.  She’s always dress appropriately for any occasion and looks like it was effortless!  Now that’s what I call “STYLE!

Part 1 Pattern Malfunction-Dangers Zones in Your Closet

If you have been to StyleCAMP you’ve heard all about my own personal pattern malfunction!  (more about that another day!)  Have you ever taken stock of what is in your closet to see what patters you have in there?  Pattern can have a wonderful way of adding new dimension and personality to your wardrobe.  It should always reflect your body’s scale and patterns.

Are you drawn to stripes or plaids or check and tweeds?  What about flowers or paisleys?  Maybe you like them all or maybe you are a bit confused.

Take a good look around your home.  Observe your artwork and table coverings.  Look at your pillows and chairs.  This will give you some indication of what you might like and what probably looks good on you.

Pattern is vital to a great working wardrobe but it shouldn’t take center stage.  When first building a working wardrobe always start with a solid foundation just as you do in your home.

Understand your physicality.  Take stock of the following:

  • Bone structure (small, medium or large)
  • Shape of your face (angled or round)
  • Patterns on your skin (smooth or textured)

These nuances will help guide you to the best designs in fabrics for your body.  Repeating a pattern in design that you like in your body is a good thing.

If you have a very angular shaped face, you a probably drawn to geometric designs.  Similarly, if your face is round and soft patterns that don’t have such a definite shape will compliment your body better.

Mom Jeans on Dads???

Did you know there was such a thing as dads wearing “mom” jeans? Well, first let me tell you what that is..A “mom jean” is high waist-ed, baggy at the thighs and totally unflattering jean that men wear-Circa 1980′s ladies!  Most men who wear them don’t really care about what their jeans look like, they are going for comfort.

I’m glad that the guys are now getting some heat from wearing “bad” jeans.  Might take some of the pressure off us women (not!)  Seriously though, everyone could use a little education on how to find a good looking pair of jeans.  Even our President has been caught wearing them.

Honestly, though the great thing about guys is that when they know they are doing something that isn’t quite right, they want to know how to fix it and how much it costs.  There’s no drama around it.  In defense of women though, men do not have the bodies that women have and to fit a women is a bit more challenging.

I found this great blog called DigitalDads!  They actually are dads who have some suggestions for men wearing “mom jeans”.

So rather than steel the thunder from DigitalDads

Check out their blog on “Mom Jeans” .  From my perspective, they’ve done a pretty good job at getting the job done guys!

One Too Many Jackets?

Can one have too many jackets? Honestly, I say no, not if they follow the 3 F’s (fit, flatter and feel good). Yesterday I received an email from a client asking the following question:

“Would I be better off having a purple corduroy jacket or a purple veleteen jacket? I’ve got both but think one is plenty for my closet. Can you wear velveteen items after Christmas?”

(Answer) I love novelty jackets of all kinds because I think that they can extend your wardrobe in so many ways.  Any jacket that has extra embellishments, specialty  fabric (corduroy, etc.),  detail (fringe) or extras that make it stand out would qualify as a novelty jacket.
So to answer your question, assuming that it does indeed adhere to the 3F’s for you, yes you can get both jackets.  YES, you CAN wear velveteen after the Christmas season is over, but more than likely you will not.  You might pull it out for “date night” but for everyday you will resort to the corduroy jacket.  Thus, the velveteen will be a classic jacket to wear again next year.

One thing about velveteen, it is a classic fabric but some seasons it is worn with more intensity than others.  Just make sure that the detail on the jacket that you get is not too telling or too dating unless you are willing to acknowledge that it is simply for the season and you are good to “let it go” when you are finished with it.
