Day #21 in the PINK-Large Handbags-Should You Own One?

DSCN1980Last night I had the good fortune to speak to a wonderful group of women who have been together since their children were babies!  How fun it wast to speak to them.

We talked about whether or not my blouse was PINK…Yes, it is Salmon Pink!  We also talked about how you can create a little  ‘style’ in your life!  Here’s a picture of a few of us.

A question came up about handbags.  HUGE handbags are all the rage  Should you carry one?   There are all kinds of answers that would “fit” here, but I want to get technical about scale and proportion.

Technically speaking, large accessories are balanced and more proportionate for larger scaled people.  Here are some checkpoints to ensure a handbag is right for you:

  1. Repeat  the shape of your body (is your face angular or soft)
  2. Repeat the scale of your bone structure (are your bones small, medium or large)
  3. Check length and make sure it does not end at your widest point on your body
  4. Check the scale of the “bling” is proportionate to your bone structure/body scale
  5. Color – make sure the color is one that you love.

Make color decisions easy and start with the hue of your hair/ skintone (warm = camel and warm brown; cool = black and cool brown)  Think of your handbag as an extension of your personality.  It should be functional but also can be a statement piece.  If you choose to have it be a statement piece, then let it be.  Don’t overdo it by having multiple statements in your wardrobe-you’ll confuse peope with what you are tyring to present.

It’s rather like eating dessert, it’s o.k. to have some but just don’t have too much!  Repeat after me:  “Scale, balance and proportion”

Day #20 in the PINK – It’s All About The Accessories

Day2 in the PinkStill PINK and going strong.  Only 11 more days to go!  I’m going to add some blue with my pink and white today.

It is going to be a beautiful fall day (finally!) here in Atlanta.  We’ve just about missed it all together.  The energy is picking up and I can see already the trees in the stores for Christmas going up.  It’s funny though to see Halloween and Christmas things going up at the same time. Hmm, guess the retailers are going to try to get a jump on things while they can.

I’ve already started looking a Spring 2010 things.  Focusing on trends I sometimes find it difficult to make purchasing decisions because trends come and go.  I remember when I was first in retail getting excited about all the new things in the store.  Then within 2 weeks I would tire of them and want to see what was coming next.

We’ve talked about the importance of good core pieces, adding accent (color) pieces.  Today I want to impress upon you the impact accessories can bring to your wardrobe.  By focusing on classic core pieces and adding your best accent (color) pieces, you can get fun and hip (trendy) with your accessories.  Trends will come and go but classic pieces remain in your wardrobe long after they are gone.

So this season, try some fun new accessories.  Look at the trends.  Do you want a little motorcycle influence?  How about some fringe or a flower?  Don’t go overboard with it, but add some subtle touches.  It’s a trend that you’ll be able to carry off in accessories (fringe on your handbag-a flower on your sweater, or maybe even a little “bib” necklace).  Try it and you’ll feel on trend this season.

Day #19 in the PINK – Atlanta 3-Day This Weekend!

I just got off the phone with a friend who is participating in the Breast Cancer 3-Day here in Atlanta this weekend.  Do you know it is her 3rd year in a row that she has done this!  That is some kind of commitment.  Go Meena, go Meena, go Meena!

I participated in the AVON 3- Day about 10 years ago and I will tell you once was enough for me.  Although the joy in participating has stayed with me, I don’t know if I could do it 3 years in a row!

After event was over I felt that I had just a small inkling of what it must be like to become an Olympic Athlete.  When you are finished with the event there is a let down.  You’ve been training for so long you are at a loss for what the next step might be.  Preparation consumes your life.  It is a tremendous accomplishment and I acknowledge all of those who participate in any fund-raising endeavour.

So here’s to Meena! You go girl!  Don’t forget why this is being done!

This year in Atlanta it will be October 23-25th.  Come on out and support the walkers.  If you can’t support them in person, pray for good weather!   Click here to see the site.

Day #18 in the PINK – Using Accent Pieces

DSCN1972We had a warm coat drive at our church.  It was exciting to see all of the coats that were donated.  Since it has been a little chillier than normal it was heartwarming to see the generosity of people sharing with others in need.

Yesterday we talked about the value of starting with “core” pieces to build your wardrobe.  Today it’s all about the next step in creating a working wardrobe.  The use of “accent pieces” will create interest and depth to your core wardrobe.

As you know, I am on day #18 in the PINK.  Learning how to wear color can be a challenge for some of us especially when most people say their favorite color is BLACK.  Wearing the same color for an entire month might present a challenge altogether different.  Unless that is you start with good core pieces.

PINK has become my ACCENT piece for the month.  The jacket that you see here is a soft pink wool boucle jacket.  I have had this jacket in my closet almost 10 years.  It is a classic cut jacket and today it worked.  That and the fact that the trends are a bit more conservative,  it goes with my CORE  brown, gray, black, cream tan, navy.

In order for your wardrobe to work for you, you must have at least 5 tops for every bottom that you own.  So, when you choose accent pieces, think of shirts, blouses, tops, t-shirts, sweaters, etc.  Choose  color that is great for you and feels good on you, flatters your skin tone, and in a fabric that fits your body well.  You may not wear it everyday but you will find that it becomes a valuable resource for you in building smart, working pieces in your wardrobe.

Day #17 in the PINK-Start with a Core Piece

I’m thinking that this is the 3rd Saturday in the PINK!  I swear a “nor-easter” blew into the south last night and we have skipped Fall altogether!  It’s cold and it’s messing with my creativity.  I’m not ready to go into winter yet!

A closet change over is going to happen sooner than anticipated.  Bring the sweaters out.  Luckily, I have a pink cotton turtle-neck shirt that I will be donning today for some added insulation.

Spring and fall can be tough times of the year to dress.  You may start out the morning in one piece and end the day having removed a layer or two.  That is the value of shopping with CORE pieces in mind.  They go with everything.

When I work with a client I teach them how to build a wardrobe based on core pieces.  These are neutral pieces (brown, black, navy, tan, etc)  Separately they might appear boring, but as you build a wardrobe they are the key to the success and simplicity in dressing.

So for today, keep it simple and be thinking of your CORE pieces you own.  Do they fit you, feel good on and flatter your figure?  If not, get a pencil and paper out and start your shopping list.

Day #16 in the PINK – The Value Separates!

O.k. I’m half way there.  Struggling today.  I have changed clothes I believe at least 4 times.  It dawned on my the reason is what I try to communicate to most people and that is that you do not have enough tops in VARIETY to make a difference in your wardrobe.

Most people are comfortable with a specific type (fabric, style etc) of clothing.  You find yourself purchasing the same garment (fabric and style) over and over again just in different colors.

For me in this “collection” of pink I have  settled on quite a few casual pieces which is making it very difficult to work into my closet.  So, after much flipping around and changing tops and bottoms, I have decided to edge it up a bit.

DSCN1883Today it is a brown suede skirt, brown fishnets, brown suede boots (I know it would look  better with brown leather-but hey give me a break!) brown tank and my soft pink crocheted sweater.  It works.

So the moral of the story is when you are buying tops there should be at least 5 (FIVE) tops for every bottom that you own.  Did you know that?  It’s not the bottoms that make your outfit unique but the tops.

Don’t forget that TODAY is the last day to register for STYLE CAMP.  It is fun and there are a few more seats left to sign up.  We have a blast and you learn how to dress in the style that says who you are!

Day #14 in the PINK

Dirk and Karen

Here we are day #14 in the PINK!  Actually, this is my brother from Idaho.  He was visiting last week when I snapped this photo.  Can you see my Slamon Pink color in the photo!  I am recycling this sweater today on day #14.

I used to say we were “twins” when we were younger!  He’s my older brother and I really looked up to him.  I still look up to him and it was fun to visit.

Anyway, let’s talk briefly about color.  I’ve stated before that color is 3 dimensional.   The 3 dimensions are hue, value and intensity.  The photo to the right shows you this.  Hue is the relationship of the color to cool (blue) and warm (yellow).   Value is how  light or dark of a color is.  Intensity is the relative brightness or softness of a color.   Many people think that they cannot wear a color when in fact it just may be the value or the intensity of that color that are too much or too little for them .  Don’t discount a specific “color”.  Ask yourself if it is one of the dimensions that you object to.

So, there you have it, your “color” education for the day.

Day #13 in the Pink – Thank Heaven’s for Accessories

Not quite half way there.  Today, I’m going ‘cowgirl’.  I have a denim skirt and just bought a pair of Frye boots. Remember them???  I love them. My first Frye boots were back int he 80′s when “boot scootin” and bull-riding was big!  They were a pointier toe and oatmeal color. These will stay in my closet alot longer.  Oh, I haven’t said what “PINK” I’m wearing yet.

Hmmmm, I think I’ll just do some beads today. I would wear my PINK Bandana, but that may put me over the top and a bit too cowgirl!   That would be a good example of taking an accessory theme a bit too far!  Remember “less is more”!  I’ll pair the denim with my white ruffle shirt, my pink bracelet and pink necklace.  Oh, thank you accessories, you make me PINK today!

Day #12 in the Pink-Ralph Lauren Polo

My son let me wear his PINK Polo today!  No, this isn’t him, but I thought I”d have some fun with this!  He told me yesterday that I could borrow his pink polo if I wanted!  Gotta love it!!  Jeans and a polo today.  I’m working on presentations for the next few weeks and getting read for STYLE CAMP

School children around here they have the day off for Columbus Day!  There are sales to be found so make sure you shop smart!  No, I’m not shopping for more PINK!

I am so excited because today I’m going to share with you a secret!

I was reading in a book this weekend about hairstyles trying to find a new one to update my look.  Did you kow that all hairstyles are based off of  just 4 basic hiarcuts?

I was shocked, but it is true and even though styles and fashions change, they all are just a variation of 4 simple cuts.  Wanna know what they are?

  1. One-length bob (hair is cut all one length-variations are a graduated bob and layered bob)
  2. Uniform layer (hair is cut into short, even-length layers that follow the shape of the head-variations are pixie and longer layers shaped around evenly around the head
  3. Short graduation (fullest part of the hair is at the temple and shaped tot he nape of the head-variations are wedge and layered wedge that looks like the “soccer cut”)
  4. Long layers (Long hairstyle where shortest layer is at the nape of the neck-”friends” cut) (From the book: Color Me Younger w/ColourmeBeautiful)

It all makes sense, so why do we have such a hard time trying to figure out how to cut our hair???

Day #11 in the Pink-Check Out the Events this Month

DSCN1956Today is scarf day!  It’s easy to dress in a color when you have a scarf.  That is the value of a LBD (little black dress).  You can use the LBD as a back drop for what ever color you want to be for the day.  Dress it up or dress it down, it is a good core piece that you should have in your wardrobe for any event.

I also want to take a minute to remind you why I am doing this and to encourage you to become aware of what is going on in your community this month.  Here in the Metropolitan Atlanta as well as Nationwide there are so many opportunities for you to become more involved, learn and improve your health and well-being this month.  What ever you do, just  “Do-It” as Nike says! Don’t forget about Style Camp coming up on the 24th of this month. It is the last camp of 2009. You won’t want to wait until 2010 to get it started and there is still time. You have until Friday, October 16th to register!
