Shopping Trends – Haul the Mall

The latest viral craze is “mall haul videos”.  Tweens, teens and twenty-somethings are doing what they do….hanging out at the mall with their friends, shopping.

This market segment which has always been a fickle market for retailers, goes to the mall, brings bags of goodies home and then video tapes them.  They’ll go through each item telling what they like and don’t like and where they got it.  Through Skype or other video means such as YouTube, they distribute their “haul”. These two girls are special. They are sisters and I’ve actually been watching them.

More than 100K+ YouTube videos are currently circulating and now it has become BIG business for numerous fashion brands.  These young shoppers are given free products to review, merchandise to try and in return the companies get free advertising!  What more could they ask for?  A teenager endorsing their products is pure gold in the retail industry.

Here’s a word of caution to all of you who are aspiring fashionistas!  Buyer beware. It sounds awfully fun doesn’t it, but I ask you to think about your closet’s needs. (I know, I sound like a mother)

I’m the first one to love a “good deal”, but a “deal” is never a “deal” unless it works for you!  Getting something that is the wrong color, style or fit will we be worn 1 time and then become an orphan.

Most women I know (over 30) are interested in looking great, finding good value and putting something in their closet that they can count on being there for a while.

So if you are compelled to do a Mall Haul video take these tips into account:

  1. Buy only what works for your body line and proportion
  2. Make sure that the item can go with at least 3-5 other items in your closet
  3. Ask yourself what part of your wardrobe it fits into. (which lifestyle and does it work?)
  4. Does if fit, flatter and feel good on?
  5. Are you buying it JUST because it’s on SALE?

If you are buying it just because it is on sale, go back and make sure that it answers all the other questions positively and that it “fits, flatters and feels good on!”  Then you have successfully “hauled the mall”.  Share it with us, let us know what it is..We want to:

Style Tips Cargo Cool

It’s summer time and the dressing is easy!  Now that the temperature is rising, why not throw on a cool cargo skirt to take the heat off!  Spring fashion always has a wonderful mix of hard and soft looks.  This season it is no different.

“Camo” has gone classic and so have the styles that go with it.  That means a cargo skirt in your closet might just be the next thing to purchase.

When you are wearing something as casual as a cargo skirt, ensure you balance out the casual flair with something less casual.  A dressier top or shoes will balance out the look and keep everything looking new and fresh.

Wearing too casual of a shoe a.k.a. a flip-flop because you want to feel more comfortable will take the whole look from young and hip to “o.l.” (old lady).

Check out these quick tips and get into the cool looks of cargo this summer.

  1. Choose a skirt that has a crisp feel and is fitted through the hips.  Make sure it isn’t too slouchy or you’ll add unnecessary pounds.
  2. Opt for a thin-tissue weight t-shirt, even a slouchy top will throw in just the right mix to soften the hard lines of the skirt. A form fitting top or shirt will become too much like a uniform – too predictable.
  3. Pair the outfit with one of the latest cage or strappy wedges and heels.
  4. Add a bucket bag or cross shoulder tote in a pop of new color -red or yellow- and you’re good to go.

Remember these things and you’ll:

Color is Important in the Kennel Club Too!

Last week I received an email from a specialty publication asking for some expert opinion on color.  This was an unusual request, but then again not really.

They were researching information for an article illustrating how the clothing a handler might wear would impact the way the dog appeared or potentially judged.  These dogs and their owners spend years in training and grooming so they can be awarded the grand prize one day.  Wouldn’t it be a shame if their handler were dressing in an outfit that didn’t blend well with the dog’s coloring?

Color is vitally important to the way we are all judged.  I can only wonder upon reading the article if either the handlers or the owners will take heed.

What about you?  When was the last time you took stock of your own coloring?  Have you ever thought about it?  I had a lot of fun taking a look at the dog’s coloring and variations of colors in their coats and breeds.  Just like their human counterparts, they do have different coloring that needs to be highlighted.  Far too often we focus on the latest trends in fashion without regard to what they might actually look like on us.

So as the summer moves into fall and the vibrant hues of summer wax into the autumnal tones of warm reds and browns, make sure you check your personal coloring to see if it is being shown in the best light!  I assure you, if you will wear colors that make you feel and look your very best, you’ll be complimented and noticed more often.  You may not win the trophy for the best dog but you will:

Becoming Fearless in Style

One of the key factors to success in anything we do is by pushing through, becoming a bit more  fearless.  No, I am not talking about jumping off the cliff; but I do want you to take a few chances on your style!

You must be willing to shake up the norm, risk a few stumbles and be willing to fail.  We’ve all heard there is  “strength through adversity”.  It can be said that the same is true for creating style, you can learn from your mistakes-failures if you will.  Being fearless, shows that you have the willingness to learn what to do right by assessing what has  gone wrong!

Last spring I participated in a new event called a closet swap.  It was amazing what people brought into the swap and to see who achieved the most success.  I have to admit I was a bit skeptical initially thinking that I didn’t want someone’s “junk”.  Besides, don’t we all have enough of our own junk?

Once I was “willing” to participate and get into the party atmosphere-really relax and get in the flow, I started to rock!  I had fun and got into it.  It was like shopping in my client’s closet.  I was looking for that one item that was the “keeper” the one piece that would make something look different. That needle in the haystack~

Do you consider your wardrobe “boring”?  Do you feel like you are in a rut, style-wise?  Have you worn the same thing for the past 15 years and just feel like there is no hope?  Trust me, there is hope even for the most hopelessly “un-stylish”.

It starts with your willingness to dig down deep and discover or re-discover who that chic is inside your soul.  Do some “soul-shopping’.  Join me for a Shop Your Closet Webinar and get yourself moving!

We all have some yin and yang to us.  If you are more yin then try some yang, and if you are more yang, why not calm down a bit and introduce some yin.  See what happens.  See if anyone says anything.  Do it with some accessories and I guarantee you will get a few heads to nod!  Get a bit of fearlessness in your attitude and you will:

“Look Good, Feel Great and Have FUN Doing It!”

Becoming a Stylista

This week I have been teaching a class in color.  There were students from the US and Canada and as far away as Korea.  All were and are serious students, learning how to become image consultants.  Midway through the first day, I said to one , I do not consider myself a “fashionista”, I consider myself a “stylista”.  I study fashion, but I am a student of style!

There is not a woman that I have met who doesn’t want to look good, be current or fashionable.  Anyone CAN buy fashionable clothes but it’s the woman the knows, truly knows her style that people notice.  She is not a “fashionista”, she’s a “stylista”!

How does she do it?  How does she learn how to buy the right clothes for herself no matter what her size, shape or lifestyles?  She is a student of herself.

Youth is very forgiving.  We all expect young people to make silly mistakes.  We forgive them because we know they are on a path, learning what to do.I used to tell my children once is a mistake, twice is probably o.k., but a third time…well that’s stupidity.  That may sound harsh, but reflect upon the “stupid mistakes” you have made.  There were probably opportunities to learn along the way that you never paid attention to.   The point is to learn from your mistakes.

DSCN3043When you are in your 20′s you should experiment with fashion.  I encourage you to try on different styles to see how you feel and what the world says when you are doing so. But DO pay attention..Remember once is a mistake!

In your 30′s,  you should have learned at the very least what shapes looks good on you in the past decade.  Narrow down the choices, you are not in college anymore.  Your closet still will have some mistakes but there shouldn’t be as many.  Mistakes now may come in the form of color or style.  Pay attention to whether you prefer floral prints or stripes, and certain fabrics or detail such as ruffles or embellishments.

By the time that you have hit your 40′s you should have a solid idea of what styles looks and feels good on you.  Eliminate EVERYTHING in your closet that is a mistake and doesn’t look or feel good on you. As your body and lifestyle changes, choices that you have made in past decades will continue to support you and make you look great.

Cruise into your 50′s and beyond embracing the simplicity of dressing for yourself and the well known adage “less is more”.  Accessories are your BFF (best friend forever). You are no longer searching for fashion because you have STYLE.  You know how to take a trend, a fashion statement and put it into your wardrobe and make it your own. Congratulations!  you have now become a “stylisa”!

Remember, you DON’T have to do it alone either!  There is great benefit to being a life long learner!  Wisdom is power and you now have the power to:

“Look Good, Feel Great and Have FUN Doing It!”

Swimming for Safety

O.k., I’ve blogged and tweeted about all the fabulous suits and now you can see what it’s all about.

Kim Johnson Gross has finally written the book that will help you learn What to Wear for the Rest of Your Life! I’ve followed her for years and have always loved her common sense approach to style.  I feel like she and I “went to the same style school”.  We think alike.

In order to be in style and to feel good you really need to get in touch with yourself and own it!  This video uses REAL PEOPLE with REAL BODIES to show you how to get into the best bathing suit this season.

Check it out and let me know what you think.

Lands’ End Canvas Helps Sofie Makeover Contest

News Flash!!  Just in, Lands’ End Canvas has agreed to help out with our Sofie Made Me Do It Makeover Contest!  Kathy Powell, our winner will receive a complete outfit.  We are over the moon with excitement and you should be too!

If you are NOT aware of Lands’ End Canvas, you will be soon.  In my humble opinion, FALL will be “to die for” at this up and coming shop.  I see it targeting J. Crew which I have always loved as chic classic apparel.  If you haven’t been to Lands’ End for awhile, you may not know that it was bought by Sears several years ago.

Initially a strategic move, I am sure the economic slump has put a damper on its movement into mainstream retail, but don’t let this stop you from going online or stopping by your nearest Sears to check it out.

It’s young and hip and from what I have seen the quality is what you have come to love with Lands’ End.  Keep it up LE.  I am looking forward to tweeting, exposing you on FaceBook and blogging.  Bring on the season!

Watch us as we update you on the latest makeover with Kathy.  She starts her process at StyleCAMP June 19th!  It’s going to be exciting.  Until then,

Delivering Happiness Today!

Today, Tony Hsieh, CEO of Zappos, Hardcover Book Delivering Happiness was launched.  I had the great fortune of getting an advanced reading copy prior to it’s national publication.

The book is called Delivering Happiness, A Path to Profits, Passion, and Purpose.  It is without a doubt one of the greatest reads I have had in business for some time!  He spends time talking about his rise to fame and fortune with Zappos, but none the less it provided me with great interest and a few smiles as well.

I think it is poised to be one of the up and coming books for all businesses to read, whether large or small.  I, for one, hope to put some of its practices into my business and see what “happiness” I can deliver!

Why doing you join me in “delivering happiness!”  We’ll see how happy we can make the world!

The bottom line is that if you are happy, you are likely to make others happy and wouldn’t it be nice to think that we could change the world and live in more harmony with one another!

You can check out the book for yourself, it was published today and you can get it online at Amazon.com

3 Coins in the Fountain

I have been ruminating over the 1950′s song 3 Coins in the  Fountain by Frank Sinatra for the past couple of months and today it finally came to me!  If you are not familiar with it, the setting is in Rome 3 American girls are searching for love.  Each tosses a coin while making a wish into the Trevi Fountain.  “Which one will the fountain bless”.

I’ve been finding a lot of pennies lately on my walks.  Today I found another one heads up!  That’s supposed to be good luck. So what do pennies and the song have to do with style?  It’s finally come to me!

If you have followed my posts you know that I’m all about accessible, achievable style.  Style is accessible and it is achievable, but it all starts in the closet.

Just like it takes 5 pennies to make a nickel, it takes at least  5 foundational pieces to build your wardrobe.  You must have foundational pieces to create the backdrop of your wardrobe.

Those 5 pieces will take you everywhere you need to go. Start with the season you are in and collect these pieces methodically until you’ve created your foundation.  Before you add any odd, random other pieces, focus only on those!

The “fountain blesses” these 5 pieces:

  1. Neutral Solid Jacket (try to make this a matched suit)
  2. Neutral Solid Slacks
  3. Neutral Solid Skirt
  4. Novelty Jacket
  5. Dark Jeans

I give a “heads up” on these additional pieces once you have your 5 easy pieces:

  1. LBD
  2. Khakis
  3. White jeans for summer
  4. Denim jacket

Work on your foundation this season and you will:

“Look Good, Feel Great and Have FUN Doing It!”
